Description

The West Summit of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, standing at 2,973 meters, is the second-highest peak of the group. The ascent follows a varied and rewarding route, offering a quieter alternative to the more popular normal route on the Great Summit (Cima Grande).

The climbing is mainly on UIAA Grade II and III terrain, on rock that has been well cleaned and solidified by frequent ascents, with a few short sections involving slightly higher difficulties.

TRIVIA

First ascent: Michael Innerkofler and Georg Ploner, August 21, 1879.

Ascent

We reach the large parking area near Rifugio Auronzo, where we leave the car. An early start is recommended, as access to the limited-capacity paid parking area can fill up quickly.
From the refuge, a short approach along a trail at the base of the wall leads to a scree gully that trends slightly left towards the start of the route. Near a series of caves excavated during the First World War, we stop to put on our climbing equipment.

The climb begins in a gully partially blocked by large boulders, which are easily overcome with straightforward scrambling. We then leave the gully to climb the wall on its left side. A succession of enjoyable rock pitches interspersed with short walking sections eventually leads us back into the gully much higher up. Following it, we reach a notch where it intersects the famous circular ledge that wraps around the mountain. This ledge serves as the descent route for many climbs on the immense and overhanging North Face.

From here, the views open up towards the western side of the massif, with beautiful glimpses of the Croda Rossa and the Rondoi Group. A few slightly more demanding moves—the most technical sections of the route—lead to the summit ridge. Following the ridge over a series of short ups and downs, we finally reach the summit cross. From the summit at nearly 3,000 meters, the panorama is truly spectacular. The imposing West Face of Cima Grande rises nearby, while the dramatic North Faces reveal their full scale and grandeur. The summit is yours, and the reward is unforgettable.

Descent

The descent follows the ascent route in reverse. A series of abseils leads comfortably back to the ledges on the ascent side of the mountain. Careful route-finding is important, as taking the wrong descent line can result in significant delays and unnecessary difficulties.

Back at Rifugio Auronzo, there is time to relax and enjoy some refreshments while reflecting on a rewarding climb that still retains the charm and spirit of the great mountaineering achievements of the past.
