The Selvaggio Blu Extreme trek is a reinterpretation of the famous Selvaggio Blu Classic: it’s done in reverse — from north to south — lasts 4 days, and is significantly more demanding than the Classic route.
The sections that, in the Classic version, are descended by abseil are tackled here in the opposite direction, involving challenging via ferrata sections, exposed passages, and climbs on juniper trunks — a true adventure!
The distances covered are shorter, but each stage still takes 5–6 hours. Evenings are spent under the stars in a tent, and dinners are just like those on the classic 5-star Selvaggio Blu trek! We carry a lightweight backpack during the trek; all our luggage is transported by boat from one stage to the next.
If you’re feeling brave, this is the trek for you — see you there! Fear of heights not allowed!
It is a true journey back in time. Along the route, you encounter the “Coili” — the old shepherds’ shelters, now no longer in use but still well preserved — offering a glimpse into traditional pastoral life of the past.
The trail is never obvious or straightforward and requires a good sense of orientation. In some sections, particularly across the deeply carved limestone fields, extra concentration is needed. Here, water and wind have shaped the rock into sharp limestone ridges, making the terrain uneven, uncomfortable, and physically demanding to walk on.
The trek follows, as much as possible, a route close to the coastline, although in certain stretches it is necessary to move inland. This means following faint paths that wind through Mediterranean scrub, hidden coves, and dramatic cliffs, offering breathtaking views over the Gulf of Orosei. These rocky sections are overcome through more technical climbing passages up to grade IV, abseils of up to 60 meters, fixed rope sections, and exposed traverses on intertwined juniper trunks known as Iscala ’e fustes.
Each stage has its own unique features, but all share one thing in common — they end with a descent to the sea, where afternoons can be spent swimming in some of Sardinia’s most beautiful beaches. These same beaches become our dining and sleeping spots, where we enjoy dinner and fall asleep under the stars, lulled by the sound of the waves.
We want to offer Selvaggio Blu as a true holiday experience.
That’s why we collaborate with a local logistics team that transports heavy luggage (spare clothes, food, water, and all overnight gear) to each stage.
The first night will be spent at Ovile Bertarelli, where dinner is lovingly prepared by the Bertarelli family using fresh, local, zero-kilometer ingredients. On the following nights, dinners will be prepared by the guides, featuring local products — from grilled fish or meat to pasta dishes — all paired with fine Cannonau wine and homemade mirto from local farmers.
During the day, participants will move from one stage to the next carrying only a light backpack with essentials for lunch and the equipment needed for the climbing sections, ensuring you can fully enjoy the stunning panoramas of the Baunei coast, day after day.
Meeting in the afternoon in Santa Maria Navarrese at Hotel Santa Maria and check-in in double or triple rooms.
Single room available upon request, with a supplement. Dinner at the hotel and briefing with the participants.
About 5 hour
Almost none
We’ll start from Hotel Santa Maria Navarrese and reach the inland area by jeep transfer.
The first part of the route is easy and downhill, followed by a long ledge known as S’Istrada Longa. Here, we encounter an exposed section of about 20 meters, which requires the placement of a rope for safety. During the descent into the valley, we’ll cross a beautiful juniper bridge that leads us toward the bottom of the bacu (small valley). A comfortable dirt road then brings us to Cala Sisine, where we can enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear sea.
Dinner and breakfast will be served at the “Su Cuile” shelter, located right next to the beach where we’ll set up our tents. A spectacular dinner — featuring grilled meat or fish — will round off the evening.
About 5/6 hours
500 meters
We begin the day with an ascent along the ledge leading to the Plumare via ferrata. A secured section follows a very exposed and scenic ledge that will take us near the large Orronorro landslide. Here there will be two long and spectacular rappels down the sheer face: the first is 35 meters long, and the second is 60 meters long—all over a sheer drop! Afterward, an easy walk through the forest brings us to a paradisiacal beach, with one final 50-meter abseil to reach the shoreline itself.
About 6/7 hours
700 meters
After watching the sunrise, we’ll hike up through the woods above. In the upper part of the trail, we’ll follow a long charcoal kiln that will lead us to the Selvaggio Blu Classico trail. From here, we’ll descend through a series of abseils in the Bacu Padente — seven in total — that eventually bring us down to the sea near the Grotta del Fico. Starting from the third abseil, we’ll even enter a hypogean cave, emerging on the opposite side of the mountain!
After the seventh abseil, a challenging traverse right above the waterline will lead us into the Grotta del Fico, where we’ll enjoy a guided visit.
About 5–6 hours
400 meters
Setting off early in the morning along the Grotta del Fico via ferrata is a great way to wake up! A short via ferrata with an elevation gain of just 50 meters, though very steep and strenuous in places, leads us into the woods above the cave. It leads us into the forest above the cave, from where we’ll follow the Selvaggio Blu in reverse, climbing short rock walls (up to grade IV) that bring us to the famous Urele hole — a unique natural passage leading into the valley descending toward Modaloru Beach.
Then we’ll climb up and reach a ledge that we’ll have to cross almost by crawling! Fortunately, it’s a short stretch (40 meters), but it requires a cool head because the exposure is significant. A safety rope set by the guide will keep even the “wildest” trekkers calm. Continuing through the steep woods of Ispuligidenie, we’ll reach the Mariolu Beach with a couple of abseils — one of them particularly airy and spectacular.
